when life gives you blueberries

My first business was a very successful blueberry stand. And by successful, I mean, I turned a profit and didn’t eat all the berries. Okay, okay. Here’s the story and what you can learn from it: when I was 8, I noticed that the local neighborhood kids always wanted to prop up a lemonade stand on the weekends. My family had a great deal of land in Northern Minnesota where wild blueberries and raspberries naturally grew. So while my friends (AKA my competition!) were slinging 10 cent cups of Kool-Aid, I was selling $2 baggies of berries.

Every weekend, my friends were lucky if they brought in $5.

My berry operation? I’d bring in a ridiculous $100 or more some weekends. I felt like a genius! Now, you might be wondering why I didn’t get into the berry biz permanently. I’m joking, there’s a point here. And the point is this: During peak seasons, it’s more important than ever to differentiate.

And for many of you on this mailing list, the key for holiday 2022 will be how your product offering stands out amongst a spending spree from your competitors and the big box stores. If you’re struggling, let me offer two stories that really stuck with me from recent Add to Cart conversations:

1. Jens and his cofounder at Shinesty decided to translate the "ugly sweater" trend into a "holiday suit" product - it created the acceleration and product strategy that has catalyzed the company to the next level. Today, they do holiday underwear. Holiday hats. And well, literally anything bold and brash to get your attention with their prints and products.

Not ready to dedicate an entire product line to holiday? I get it. Try this story on for inspiration:

2. Zoë at Bim Bam Boo released a Jingle Rolls 6 pack of toilet paper last holiday season that SANG YOU CAROLS before you wiped your... you know what. The product? Didn’t change. The cost of the goods? Untouched. All she had to do was change some paper around the rolls and add a silly $1 sound box and send her singing stool softeners (Oh lord, stop me…) you get the point. The company was listed on a gift guide for the Today show! And cue the HALLELUJAHs.

The point is: standing out doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to:

  1. Be in line with what you can offer or sell logically
  2. Take advantage of the season at play
  3. And feel radically different from the norm

Now’s your moment. What will you do differently this year?
